UPHOLDING TRUTH

“You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.”
James 4:4 NIV

The conversation around truth has become very sloppy in our day. We are living in a time when many have been genuinely deceived into believing that everyone can have “their truth.”

While something may be true, meaning factually or situationally correct by human verification— truth is God’s ultimate reality, perspective, and redemptive purpose. What is true doesn’t necessarily make it truth, because the essence of truth lies in its immutability.

With this in mind, Scripture gives us multiple examples of situations that were true, but if seen through God’s perspective, were not rooted in His truth. In our theme verse, James uses strong language to describe a time eerily similar to our own, a strange accommodation of worldly values and views, even by those who claim to believe, yet live in opposition to God’s truth.

It’s vital to remember that sanctification, what every born-again believer is undergoing until Christ’s return— is by truth. Jesus prayed, Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17:17). And by this we know: apart from His Word, our definitions of truth can neither save nor stand.

Child of God, do not be deceived. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life—and unless that reality sinks so deep into your being that it governs your worldview and decision-making, there will always be room for deception. Let the Word shape and define the world for you. In doing so, you will remain anchored in a time when the landscape is ever shifting.

Praise God!

Prayer: My Father, I thank you for your word. I am anchored in Your unchanging truth. I trust Your Word to sanctify and govern my heart, my thoughts, and my steps. Where the world offers counterfeit convictions, help me to stand on the rock of Your eternal reality. By your grace It will be said of me to be a witness to Your truth in a deceived world. In Jesus’ name, amen.
