ON SPIRITUAL FATHERHOOD (III)
“To Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.”
I Timothy 1:2 NKJV
In the New Testament, Paul is the first to use the term “son in the faith,” highlighting the responsibility of those who lay the foundation for a doctrine to be established.
Spiritual parenthood, unlike biological parenthood, is more complex. It involves guiding someone who is already influenced by family history, cultural backgrounds, and traditions that shape their core beliefs. Therefore, a spiritual parent must be patient, a good listener, and have the ability to understand those entrusted to them. This enables them to communicate biblical truth in a way that nurtures rather than wounds the spirit.
In verse 5 of the same passage, Paul reveals the purpose behind the instruction of a spiritual covering: “Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith.” Spiritual fatherhood is not about imposing your own beliefs and traditions on those entrusted to you, but about guiding them with sincere faith that points to Christ as the ultimate Savior.
Even as you are used as a vessel to transfer knowledge, provide understanding, and establish wisdom, your focus should remain on pointing to Christ and not to yourself.
Prayer: Father, thank You for this wisdom. I pray for those seeking a meaningful relationship under trustworthy leadership, that they may be placed in the right hands at the right time. Grant grace to listen and obey, and strengthen leaders with faithfulness and patience. May Your light shine through these relationships, drawing others to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
