TO BE BLESSED (I)

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3 NIV

The word blessing is often reduced to comfort, success, or material gain.

While those can be expressions of God’s goodness, they are not the essence of what it means to be truly blessed. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus turns the world’s value system upside down. He begins with a declaration that seems almost contradictory: “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” These are the ones the world might overlook—those who know their spiritual bankruptcy apart from God. But in Christ’s kingdom, such souls are not only seen—they are favored.

To be poor in spirit is to live in humble dependence on God. It is the posture of one who recognizes their deep need and surrenders fully, trusting in God’s sufficiency for spirit, soul, and body. This heart does not demand, but receives. It does not boast, but bows. And the promise? Theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Not just one day—but even now, they walk with the King. For those poor in spirit, the greatest blessing is not a gift, but the Giver Himself.

In His presence is fullness of joy, abundant life, and peace that surpasses understanding. They lack nothing because they have Him. Let this be the longing of your heart—not to appear full, but to be empty enough for God to fill. For to be poor in spirit is to be rich in Him. And He is the source from whom all blessings flow. Praise God!

Prayer: Father, I thank You for the wisdom of Your kingdom. Search my heart, and show me where I have leaned on my own strength rather than on You. Teach me what it means to be poor in spirit, that I may walk humbly and trust fully. Let my deepest joy be found in Your presence, and let my life glorify You, the One from whom all blessings flow. Amen.
