TO BE BLESSED (II)
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Matthew 5:4 NIV
As we understood from yesterday’s devotional, the definition of blessing according to the world often differs from the Lord’s. In our theme scripture, Jesus tells us plainly that comfort follows mourning—meaning we don’t truly need comfort unless there has been mourning. But this goes far deeper than tears shed over the loss of a loved one. Jesus speaks of a spiritual mourning—a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit that convicts us and leads us to grieve over our sin.
Paul echoes this in 2 Corinthians 7:10: “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret.” In other words, those who feel no need to repent have no need for comfort. But those who are broken over their sin are the very ones who will experience the divine comfort only the Lord can give.
Child of God, the most secure place to be is in the comfort of the Lord—a nearness we only begin to treasure when we have first been brought low in repentance. The arms of Christ are wide open for those who mourn what grieves His heart.
Prayer: My Father, I thank you for this wisdom. I am attuned to what grieves your heart and mourn over my sins. My heart is tender to Your Spirit, that I may not gloss over sin but be brought low in repentance and be lifted by the comfort You so freely give in Jesus name. Amen!
