TRUE FREEDOM FOLLOWS THROUGH

“Now when all the princes and all the people, who had entered into the covenant, heard that everyone should set free his male and female slaves, that no one should keep them in bondage anymore, they obeyed and let them go.” Jeremiah 34:10 NKJV

Covenant moments often begin with conviction, a stirring of the heart where truth pierces through complacency.

The people of Judah had reached such a moment. They recognized that keeping their fellow Israelites in bondage violated God’s heart and His covenant purposes. In repentance, they made a noble decision to set the captives free. But what began in obedience soon faltered in follow-through. A few verses later, they reversed their promise and enslaved those they had just released (Jeremiah 34:11). Their obedience was partial, emotional, a momentary compliance without an enduring transformation.

The same happens today. Some people hear a sermon, experience a breakthrough, make a covenant before God, only to retreat when obedience becomes inconvenient. We declare freedom in Christ yet keep others bound by resentment, control, or unforgiveness. We let go with our lips but not with our hearts. True freedom requires consistency. The same grace that convicts us must sustain us to continue in obedience. God doesn’t simply call us to make declarations of change; He calls us to walk in that change daily. Covenants are not sealed in emotion but proven in endurance.

Child of God, in whatever you do, aim to release others as God commands, whether emotionally, spiritually, or relationally. This aligns you with His redemptive nature. Christ never retracts His freedom toward us. His covenant is sealed in blood, not words. And it is by this grace that we can truly set others free, never to enslave again.

Prayer: My Father, I thank you for this truth. I repent of any time I have made promises of freedom and failed to follow through. By your grace, I walk in the freedom You’ve given me to let go as You have let go of my debts. Strengthen my obedience beyond emotion; make it enduring through Your Spirit. May it be said of me that my life reflected the constancy of Your covenant love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
