DEMONSTRATING LOVE THROUGH OBEDIENCE
“And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” Genesis 22:12 NKJV
A puritan author of old, Thomas Manton, once explained purpose for trial in man’s life : “God knows all things by intuition; but man’s faith must be known by trial.”
Our theme scripture is an example of Abraham’s fear of God, but even more so — His love for God. Abraham’s love for God reached his heart’s tenderest affection: his only son. We know this to be true by the words “now I know that you fear God since you have not withheld your son, your ONLY son from Me”.
As Manton mentioned, God did not acquire new knowledge for He knows all things, but for man trial tests and proves, that the works of faith may be displayed to the world. True love for God will always be tested at the altar of surrender. We cannot claim to love Him while withholding what He asks of us. Abraham’s example teaches us that obedience is love in action, and that faith, when tested, is not destroyed but refined.
May it be said of you that your faith in and fear of God united so perfectly at the summit of your obedience. Hallelujah!
Prayer: My Father, I thank You for Your unfailing love and wisdom that lead me through every test. Thank You for teaching me that true love for You is shown in willing obedience. I am grateful that Your grace enables me to surrender what I hold dear, knowing You always provide better than I could imagine. My life continually testifies of Your goodness, now and forevermore. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
