THE DECEPTIVE REWARDS OF SECRET SIN
“Stolen water is sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of hell.” Proverbs 9:17-18 NKJV
There is a certain thrill that sin promises, but it lasts only for a moment while its consequences are costly.
Scripture does not deny that allure, it is true that secret indulgence can seem like no one is hurt. But the deception lies in the unseen cost. What feels like pleasure is, in reality, poison. The writer of proverbs warns that the path of folly always begins with quiet compromise, a small concession or a secret step away from the light. With sin however, the sweetness is only the coating on a path that sinks a soul into spiritual decay.
God’s wisdom exposes this not to shame us, but to rescue us. Grace does not simply forgive hidden sin, it pulls it into the light where healing begins. Every time we trade holiness for a moment of sweet secrecy, Jesus gently calls us back to come out of the shadows and live where life is found.
Child of God, the gospel replaces the deceptive sweetness of sin with the lasting joy of holiness. What is stolen can never satisfy. What is secret cannot strengthen. But what is surrendered to Christ becomes redeemed, restored, and made whole.
Prayer: My Father, i thank you for rescuing me from hidden sin. By your spirit you tame me and teach me to walk upright, replacing every deceptive pleasure with the joy of Your presence. Fix my desires on what is pure, holy, and life-giving. Keep me on the path of wisdom, and let my life be anchored in the grace that frees and restores, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
