CALLED TO BLESS

“Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.”
1 Peter 3:8-9 NIV

The gospel does not only change what we believe. It changes how we respond.

1 Peter was written to believers facing misunderstanding, hostility, and pressure. Yet Peter does not instruct them to defend their pride or demand their rights. Instead, he calls them to reflect Christ: unity in spirit, tenderness in heart, humility in posture.

This kind of life is impossible without grace. Our natural instinct is to repay evil with evil. When insulted, we want to return the wound. When misunderstood, we want to justify ourselves. But Peter reminds us that we have been called to something higher. Because Christ did not repay us according to our sin, we are now free to respond differently to others.

To bless when cursed is not weakness. It is evidence that the gospel has taken root. It shows that our identity is no longer anchored in human approval but in divine mercy.

We bless because we have been blessed.
We forgive because we have been forgiven.
We humble ourselves because Christ humbled Himself for us.

And in living this way, we inherit the deeper blessing — the joy of walking in step with the heart of Jesus.
Grace not only saves us from sin; it reshapes our reactions.

Prayer: My Father, I thank you for forming in me a heart that reflects yours. I thank you for your spirit that tames me, even when I am wronged, and keeps me from retaliation. Teach me to bless, to show compassion, and to walk in humility. Let the grace I have received become the grace I extend. In Jesus’ name, amen.
