CLOTHED IN HUMILITY (I)
“To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not Lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.” 1 Peter 5:1-3 NIV
Peter, previously known as Simon, writes here not merely as a leader, but as one deeply acquainted with both the sufferings and promises of The Christ. He appeals to fellow elders not from a place of superiority, but as a brother and fellow partaker in the glory yet to be revealed.
His charge was: shepherd God’s people with a willing heart. Not from obligation, not for gain, and never with a domineering spirit. Instead, serve eagerly, and lead by example. What’s striking is that Peter, if anyone, could have claimed a privileged position, heaving walked closely with the Lord, witnessed His glory, and was even commissioned directly by Christ — he would have been best fit.
Yet, he speaks humbly, calling himself simply a “fellow elder.” He remembers well the Lord’s words: “I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:32). And in this, the prophecy is fulfilled. In humility, Peter was not swayed by the prestige that would have come from being a living witness and close follower of the Christ in flesh — but rejoiced in knowing that it was every true Christian’s privilege to be a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed. Child of God, may it be said of you that you held the doors of the Father’s house wide open. That by grace, you led others into His presence, not for your sake, but for His glory.
Whatever your calling, may it be marked by humility, eagerness, and the gentle strength of Christ. Hallelujah!
Prayer: My Father, thank You for this wisdom. I lift up every minister of the Gospel today, those called to shepherd and those serving in quiet faithfulness. May they carry their calling with purity, humility, and joy. And may we all, as light and salt in this world, be ready to share the hope we have in Christ. Draw many through our witness, and hold fast to every soul entrusted to You until that glorious day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
