DEATH FOR LIFE
“Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him.” Hebrews 5:8-9 NLT
There was no greater need for the Son of God to exercise obedience than when He submitted to death— even death on a cross.
Heaven is known for life and abundance, and for the one who came from heaven to submit to death, such act required more submission, brokenness, and obedience than we can ever fully comprehend. He did this to fulfill all righteousness, experiencing and living through the trials we face, providing a perfect example for us to follow in our sanctification.
Bible scholar Matthew Henry, captures it best: “Here He has left us an example, that we should learn by all our afflictions a humble obedience to the will of God. We need affliction to teach us submission.” Every act of obedience to God demands a death to self. It is in the soil of affliction that humility grows, and from humility comes submission.
Child of God, this understanding is what allows us to follow Paul’s counsel to “be joyful in affliction.”
Hallelujah!
Prayer: Father, I thank you for this word. I thank you for your priceless sacrifice that enables me the choice to live well and break free from sin. I am the offering, you bring the flame and purify what is not of you, in Jesus name. Amen!
