DOUBLE EDGED INSTRUCTIONS (I)
“All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered. Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers. Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare of their slaves. These are the things you are to teach and insist on.” 1 Timothy 6:1-2 NIV
Scriptures like 1 Timothy 6:1–2 were tragically twisted to justify oppression during slavery, but Paul’s actual instruction is about honor, integrity, and witness, not exploitation. It is important to understand that even if men may twist certain scriptures for their personal gains, that doesn’t invalidate the divine instruction it carries.
With that in mind, this same word may translate to a modern day corporate or private employee/ employer as a call to believers to conduct themselves at work with such integrity, respect, and excellence that their behavior enhances the reputation of Christ in them.
This is about a rightful representation of Christ and not an endorsement of broken and unjust systems.
The apostle also brings a sharp balance to those who serve masters that are believers: not to take advantage of the Christian boss by assuming leniency, cutting corners, or being casual because “we’re both believers.” An understanding of both makes a balanced individual in the marketplace, working all things as unto God.
Child of God, may it be said of you that you honored the Lord in all of your dealings, especially when it was hardest to do so.
Prayer: My Father, I thank you for this wisdom. I know that above all men’s praises, I live before you as my primary audience. Help me to always follow your leading in humility and with wisdom. May it be said of me that I exuded the aroma of Christ to all those that encounter me, to the glory of your name. Amen!
