EXAMINING ONE’S STANDING
“Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test.” 2 Corinthians 13:5-6 NIV
The exhortation to examine oneself reminds us that genuine faith is not merely a profession or reciting a formula, but a life lived in the faith.
This is not an invitation to become your harshest critic, but a call to discern whether you live in the reality of faith, whether you are united with Christ and bearing the marks of that union. To “be in the faith” is to dwell in Christ, not simply know about Him. Many deceive themselves by assuming that listening to sermons once, or praying a prayer long ago, makes everything settled. Yet Jesus tells us we will recognize His own by their fruit, and Paul echoes that truth here.
If the Corinthians’ lives had truly changed, if grace was shaping their conduct, if humility flavored their speech, if their walk reflected Christ — then that fruit would validate their discipleship and his ministry among them. Beloved, it is good and wise to periodically examine where you stand, and where your roots truly lie.
Ask yourself: Is there growth? Is grace flowing to you and through you? Is there a slowness to anger and a readiness to love? Is there peace, patience, gentleness, evidence of the Spirit’s shaping? As you find areas still needing refinement, yield them to God for pruning, correction, and continued growth in Christ.
Prayer: My Father, thank You that You dwell in me by Your Spirit. Help me to examine my heart not with fear or condemnation, but with humility and hope. Reveal the places where fruit is growing, and the places that still need pruning. Make my life a witness of Your grace, marked by love, patience, and faithfulness. Keep me rooted in You, and strengthen me to walk in a way that honors Your name, on Jesus name. Amen
