GUARDING WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE (I)
“Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.” 2 Timothy 1:14 NIV
Recently, a friend shared a video with me. The moment I read the title on the thumbnail, I knew not to watch it.
In our theme scripture, Paul gives Timothy a clear charge: “Guard the deposit entrusted to you,” and he reminds him that the Holy Spirit will help him do so. When you intentionally nurture your relationship with the Holy Spirit, He becomes that still small voice promised in Isaiah 30:21 saying “This is the way, walk in it.”
While the Holy Spirit helps us, we also bear personal responsibility to guard what we’ve received, not in a conceited way, but in reverence and obedience to His convictions. For instance, if you’ve been taught by sound spiritual authorities to refrain from slanderous conversation, it is your responsibility to get up and walk away when others engage in it. And when you yourself feel the urge to speak negatively about someone, even if what you’re saying is factually true — if it harms their image, it’s best to refrain.
There is a general call to holiness for every believer, but for those who carry the Spirit of God and have received specific instruction, there is an even greater demand: to walk in the light we’ve been given, and to guard it well.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank You for the good deposit of truth, conviction, and a heart awakened to righteousness placed in me. Teach me to value what You have entrusted to me. Help me not only to walk in the light but to guard it with a heart of reverence. When temptation comes to compromise, speak clearly and give me strength to obey. May my life honor the grace You’ve given and the truth You’ve revealed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
