OF HUMAN STRUCTURES PASSING AWAY
“Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” Matthew 24:1-2 NIV
The prophetic account in our theme scripture today is a pivotal part of Christ’s earthly ministry. The temple in this scene represented the presence of God among His people, and many not only marveled at its beauty but also placed their trust in its seeming permanence.
The judgment Jesus pronounces here came because the Jews rejected Him as Messiah — fully God and the Son of God, placing instead their confidence in rituals, in the privileges of being God’s chosen people, and in their heritage as descendants of Abraham. In time, the Roman siege brought this prophecy to pass, leaving the temple in ruins, exactly as Jesus had declared. What does this teach us?
(1)We must never place our security in anything other than the reality and rule of the Kingdom of God. (2)The new covenant finds its meaning and fullness in Christ alone and (3)final judgment is certain, and only those who trust in Him will be saved.
Child of God, see to it that your trust lies in Christ alone and it shall be well with you.
Prayer: My Father I thank you for this word. My heart rests in my Savior and Lord- Jesus Christ alone. Strip away every false security and every confidence in what will one day pass away. Help me to cling to the unshakable hope of Your Kingdom, to live faithfully in Your covenant grace, and to be found ready when You return, in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
