PULLING DOWN OF STRONGHOLDS
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,”
II Corinthians 10:4-5 NKJV
A stronghold was part of a castle wall that served as a reinforced structure designed to increase the castle’s defensive capabilities and provide a stronger vantage point for defenders.
This structure acted as an elevated, heavily fortified area within the existing wall, allowing defenders to fire on attackers from multiple angles and protect against direct assaults on the wall itself. With that in mind, our theme scripture points to strongholds that may be enhanced with the same tenacity as the castle wall described above but not for our good but to the detriment of our obedience to God.
Some people have offensively assumed the position of victimhood. They own up to diseases, to ideas and constructs that are completely opposing to the truth in Scripture, and unbeknownst to them, they feed it until it becomes an unbreakable castle that keeps the Lord at arm’s length.
For example, a person may believe, “God could never forgive me for what I’ve done,” and cling to that lie until it becomes their reality. This false belief, though contrary to the very heart of the gospel, grows into a fortified wall that resists the freedom and grace God offers in Christ. These are the kinds Paul is addressing.
Child of God, do not build a castle around the false ideas you have about yourself, about God, and His nature. Instead, allow His truth to pull them down and bring every thought into captivity to Christ, where real freedom is found.
Prayer: My Father, I thank You for giving us mighty weapons in Christ to tear down every lie that seeks to exalt itself above Your truth. Thank You that I walk freely in the knowledge of Your love and forgiveness. Help me to remain vigilant, always surrendering my thoughts to the obedience of Christ. Today, I rejoice in the victory You have already given me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
