RUNNING LIGHT

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,” Hebrews 12:1 NIV

Hebrews 11 sets before us a host of saints who stand not as passive bystanders but as living testifiers to the faithfulness of God. The Greek uses “cloud” metaphorically to describe the vast multitude of men and women who trusted, endured, and finished the race.

Their stories remain as signposts for us: warnings of pitfalls to avoid, lessons from their failures, and encouragements drawn from their victories. They are not merely spectators of our journey but living evidence that it is possible to run faithfully, and to finish well.

Yet, the race demands that we run light. The “weights” we carry are not often physical but inward affections, ambitions, or attachments that pull us away from God’s purpose. Sometimes these weights look like people we love, careers we long for, or relationships we desire; yet if they are misaligned with the purposes of God for you, they must be laid aside.

Costly though it may be, it is only in shedding them that we run unhindered. So, child of God, the question remains: will you obey?

Prayer: My Father, I thank You for the cloud of witnesses who bear testimony to Your faithfulness across generations. Teach me to run my race with endurance, laying aside every weight that hinders and every sin that entangles. Give me courage to obey, even when surrender feels costly, and fix my eyes on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of my faith. May my life, too, bear witness to Your grace. In Christ’s name, Amen.
