THE BENEFITS OF BEING TEACHABLE

“Apply your heart to instruction, And your ears to words of knowledge.” Proverbs 23:12 NKJV

When you buy something at the store, it comes with a manual of instructions to follow in order to use the said tool appropriately.

Naturally, we will have several occasions in life where we receive instructions designed to help us in our growth, careers, marriages, service, and so on. Not everyone, however, is willing to receive instruction. Some dismiss it, some resist it, and others pridefully believe they know enough already. Yet the Bible reminds us that wisdom begins with humility: the willingness to be taught.

Being teachable does not make us weak; it makes us wise. God often sends guidance through His Word, through the counsel of others, and even through life’s trials. To shut ourselves off from correction or instruction is to shut ourselves off from growth. But when we open our hearts and ears, we position ourselves to receive wisdom that guards us, shapes us, and equips us to flourish in every area of life. A teachable spirit reflects Christ Himself, who though being the Son of God, still submitted to the Father’s will, even learning obedience through suffering (Hebrews 5:8). If He, being perfect, embraced instruction, how much more should we?

The one who embraces correction and wisdom will never be put to shame. Their steps are steadied, their character deepened, and their lives bear fruit for God’s glory.

Prayer: My Father, I thank you for this wisdom. give me a heart that is humble and teachable. Help me to value Your Word above my own opinions, and to welcome wise counsel when it comes my way. Strip away any pride that resists instruction, and shape me into one who delights in learning from You and from those You send into my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
