THE EFFECT OF DISSOCIATION
“And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 NIV
Many of you who may have had a heavy past and came to Christ later in life can testify: when you look back on the things you once did, you wonder, What could I have been thinking? Words often fall short in describing the disconnect. In our theme scripture, Paul explains exactly what happens to a mind that refuses to acknowledge God: the eyes of understanding are veiled. As you’ve likely heard, darkness is simply the absence of light. At salvation, this veil is lifted as the light of the Gospel begins to shine where darkness once ruled.
So when you lose appetite—literally or figuratively—for the things you once enjoyed, know this: the new nature given to you is not only to remove sin but to make you entirely new, as God originally intended before sin entered the world. Child of God, this is the essence of transformation by the renewal of your mind (Romans 12:2). No one who truly understands this willingly returns to old behavior, for you cannot fully experience the privileges of light and choose to walk back into darkness—unless you had never truly understood from the start. Selah!
Prayer: My Father, I thank You for the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. By Your grace and through Christ’s obedience, I am renewed daily, perfect in Your sight and being made holy. I choose to believe Your report over me above any other, that my life may glorify the work of my Father—in Jesus’ name. Amen.
