THE HEART POSTURE

“Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?” Job 38:2-5 NIV

In a world where man often assumes the right to interpret divine justice, God reorients Job’s perspective by reminding him of his smallness face to face with God’s sovereignty.

He asks these questions not to shame Job but to awaken him. His questions are not about knowledge but about posture. God’s questions strip Job of presumption and bring him face to face with the Creator who owes no creature an explanation. Every time we attempt to reason God’s actions within the boundaries of our comprehension, we step into the same error. Our vision is limited, our judgments partial, our understanding clouded by sin and self. Yet the God who questioned Job is also the God who draws near to humanity in Christ.

The One who laid earth’s foundations later stooped to wash His disciples’ feet. He does not owe us answers, yet He gives Himself, the Word made flesh, as the ultimate revelation of divine wisdom and love. Thus, when heaven seems silent, we can rest not in what we understand, but in Who understands all things.

Faith does not demand God’s reasoning; it clings to His character. The Creator of the cosmos still governs the details of our suffering, and His questions are meant to humble us into trust, not push us into despair or presumption.

Prayer: My Father, I thank you for this wisdom. Deliver me from presuming to speak of things too wonderful for me. In Your mercy, humble my heart to rest in the mystery of Your wisdom. May Your questions remind me that You are God, and in that truth, let my soul find peace. Amen.
