THE LEGITIMACY OF SCRIPTURE
“Remember him—before the silver cord is severed, and the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the wheel broken at the well, and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails—given by one shepherd. Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.” Ecclesiastes 12:6-7, 11-12 NIV
Our theme scripture is a great reminder of substantial truths in life: life is fragile and fleeting, death is certain, accountability before God is real and divine wisdom is urgent and instrumental.
In light of such certainty, Scripture presents wisdom not as optional enrichment but as essential direction. The words of the wise are described as goads, they press, correct, and redirect wandering hearts. They are also like well-driven nails, steady, anchoring, immovable. Its imperative to know that truth both confronts and secures.
And crucially, they are given by one Shepherd. Child of God, wisdom is not self-generated insight or cultural consensus. It is a shepherd-given revelation. Its legitimacy does not rest on popularity or volume, but on divine origin.
Therefore, always remember such study without submission exhausts the body but does not necessarily transform the heart. Scripture, however, is not merely information to be consumed but revelation to be obeyed.
In a world saturated with voices, its authority remains singular because its source is singular. Let us be known for being anchored in the Shepherd’s Word.
Prayer: My Father, I thank you for this wisdom. Teach me to number my days and to value your Word above every competing voice. My hearts is anchored in what you have spoken. Your corrects me, steadies me, and shepherds me until the day my spirit returns to you, in Jesus name. Amen.
