TO BE A VESSEL
“And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” Romans 5:5 NIV
We are incapable of bringing ourselves to love God fully in our own might.
Jesus puts it plain and simple: those who love me obey my commands (John 14:21). So why is man’s most natural inclination to rebel/ disobey? Because the love for God in us is not a work of self but of His Spirit working in us.
By His Spirit, we serve, we seek to glorify Him through our works, we make every attempt to love as recklessly and unreservedly as possible. By His Spirit, we can never be found in error because that very spirit knows the heart of God (1 Corinthians 2:10) and knows only How To obey Him.
Child of God, to be a vessel is not to heap up acts of service or to stack spiritual credentials in church or in community, but to be most attuned to His Spirit and give Him liberty to do the works already existing in God’s mind —in and through you.
That is what it means to be a vessel. Selah!
Prayer: My Father, I thank you for this wisdom. I thank you for giving me your Holy Spirit to live the life of Christ in me. By your grace, I am able to boast in the Lord and in His obedience to the Father’s lead, not apart from me but in and through me — to the glory of your name. Amen!
