WORKING OUT YOUR SALVATION

“If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.” 1 Corinthians 3:12-14 NIV

If you’ve ever seen wood, hay, or straw, you know they are often found in abundance, stacked and easy to access.

In this passage, Paul uses a powerful metaphor to illustrate one’s devotion to pursuing the Lord. Those who seek Him only when it’s convenient, occasionally, or in small doses are many, and the fruit they produce is clear to see.

On the other hand, materials like gold, silver, or precious stones demand effort, digging, intentionality, persistence, and sacrifice. These are far fewer in number but offer a firm foundation. In essence, child of God, working out your salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12) is a response to the grace you’ve received in Christ.

It’s not about performing works to earn or deserve something in exchange for your devotion, as some may mistakenly believe. Let your heart be fully devoted to responding to what you’ve already been given in Christ, not to the temptations to revert to works that lead to entitlement and bondage. Selah!

Prayer: Father, I thank you for this wisdom. I set my heart on the race you have called me to run knowing that I have all that I need for life and godliness. Above all, I have your very spirit to teach, counsel and guide me into your ways, I cannot lose nor fail, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
