OPINION AND CHARACTER

“He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.” 1 Timothy 3:7 NIV

One of the things we as humans are extremely protective of is our reputation.

By definition, reputation is the shared belief people hold about who you are. It is formed over time by what you do, what you say, and how you consistently show up. It is a pattern by which you are known and seen by others.

Character on the other hand is who you are. It is important to know the difference between character (who you are) and reputation (who people think you are), because mixing up the two makes you prioritize the least important things.

In our theme scripture, Paul describes the importance of a good reputation for an overseer, but this instruction extends even to us who are lay believers. We too have an eternal responsibility to glorify Christ with our actions, thoughts and behaviors.

Although what you are known for is important and possibly holds a certain degree of truth, God is mostly interested in who you are (character), because ultimately character has more power to influence reputation than the other way around.

It is therefore no wonder, character may be formed and perfected while your reputation is on the line, and these could be testimonies that God writes as he refines you. The opposite is least likely, for attempts to preserve a reputation more than being of good character display a haughty heart, fearing man and being ensnared.

May it be said of us that we were men/ women of both character and integrity— whose reputation will be a vindication from God. Praise Him!

Prayer: Father, I thank you for this word. I thank you for the formation of character which your spirit enables in me. As I get to know your nature, heart and thoughts towards me through the word, I am transformed daily into the likeness of Christ. I do not shun discipline or conviction by your spirit, that I may be fully furnished for the work of ministry. May Christ be glorified in all my dealings, amen!
