BEFRIENDED BY GOD

“The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.””
1 Samuel 17:37 NIV

At some point in life, most of us have encountered a friend whose presence was more than occasional, a friend who stood with us in different seasons, was loyal in our low moments, and stayed when others may have walked away. That kind of friendship leaves a mark.

In today’s scripture, David reflects on such a presence in his own life, not a human companion, but God Himself. With boldness, he declares that the same Lord who had once delivered him from the paw of the lion and the bear would surely deliver him again. That’s not just courage speaking; that’s the confidence of a man who knew God not only as Lord, but as Friend.

Perhaps you were taught to think of God only in terms of judgment or authority, holy and high, but far off. And yes, He is righteous and worthy of awe. But David reminds us that He is also near, walks with us into our battles and a present help in time of need.

God not only remembers our past trials, but shows up, again and again, not as a distant observer, but as a faithful companion who tests the severity of every challenge before it can ever come near.  Child of God, whatever your current circumstance, take heart.

The same God who brought you through before will not abandon you now. In reverence, yet with deep trust, you can call Him Friend.

Prayer: My Father, I thank You for being not only my Savior and Shepherd, but also my faithful Friend. I trust in your faithfulness because you’ve carried me through in the past, and helped me to trust You every day. I may not see the whole path ahead, but I know You walk beside me. And that is enough. In Jesus’ name, amen.
