BEWARE NOT TO BE TRIPPED UP
“So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 NIV
When we go through Scripture, we see that many Bible characters did not fall because of their weaknesses, but rather because of their strongest suits.
Take Samson as an example: his downfall came when he revealed the source of his strength (Judges 16:17). Abraham’s greatest mistake was attempting, by his own might, to fulfill what God had already promised to accomplish by His power (Genesis 16). Joab, a mighty man of David, did not follow Absalom—a more promising leader—when he usurped the kingdom, but instead followed Adonijah, who was weaker and more cowardly (1 Kings 2:28).
Never assume that where you have once overcome by the Spirit, you are now immune from falling again. The temptations may not carry the same power or zeal as before, but the fact that you were once vulnerable in that area demands prudence when engaging similar circumstances. Understand that you are kept by the power of God (1 Peter 1:5), and continually yield your spirit and soul to this truth—for it shall be well with you!
Prayer: Father, I thank You for this wisdom. Search my heart and reveal to me any grievous ways before You. Let Your Spirit convict and teach me in all things ethical and divine, and by Your power, keep my feet from stumbling into any old, looming habits. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
