HEART POSTURE

“If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear.” Psalms 66:18 NKJV

The word iniquity in our theme scripture in its root translation refers to different things with similar effects such as sorrow, idolatry, wickedness or trouble. This means, if you get into prayer with a sorrowful heart, your heart posture is not conducive for God to speak and for you to hear. Your inclination to observe and insist on the cause of your sorrow distracts you not only from the finished work of Christ for you, but from the fullness of joy which is found in His presence (Psalm 16:11).

If you get into prayer with a heart full of idols, your posture will always be one of a taker. Never seeking God for who He is but only what He can give, and you can never ask enough or more than He has already purposed to give you, given He didn’t spare even His only Son (Romans 8:32). If your heart is wicked, never responding to the convictions of the Holy Spirit, approaching Him with unbelief or being so self aware that you are unaware of everyone else — you will neither be praying in understanding (1 Corinthians 14:15) nor feeling after His heart (Acts 17:27).

And finally, if you come only when in trouble, you are what scripture calls a sluggard who does not plow because its cold and when its warm he has nothing to eat (Proverbs 20:4). We don’t just seek God in trouble, we cultivate communion with God and once trouble comes, it finds us on solid ground. Child of God, see to it that none of these things inhabit your heart. If you may, minister to them by the word and confess it above your emotions and feelings, then come in His presence with thanksgiving and joy that you are actively being delivered of all troubles for God is not a man to lie and what He says stands. Hallelujah!

Prayer: Father I thank you for this word. As the Psalmist proceeds to say, you have listened to my prayers for my heart regards no iniquity. I have learnt to quiet my spirit and walk in tandem with the instructions of my teacher, the Holy Spirit. Because of this, I serve you with my mind, I pray in spirit and I worship intelligently , in Jesus name. Amen!
