OF GUARDING YOUR SOUL

“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.” Colossians 2:8 NIV

We live in a time where “depth” has become somewhat trendy. However, not everything that sounds wise is necessarily true. There is a kind of thinking that impresses the mind and inflates ego but does no good to the heart.

That’s what Paul’s warning is against, deception disguised as wisdom. It is the kind that borrows language from truth but removes Christ from the center. It elevates human reasoning while subtly lowering divine authority. And if we are not watchful, we can admire what actually insults the cross.

To be “taken captive” is to be led away without realizing it. Not by force, but by agreement. The enemy rarely needs to push when he can persuade.
But the believer is not left at his mercy. We are not called to out-argue every idea, but to remain anchored in Christ. Truth is not merely something we study, it is Someone we abide in.

“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17:17 NKJV)

When Christ is central, deception loses its grip. And when His Word is final, confusion loses its voice. Child of God, you don’t need to chase every philosophy, just stay rooted in the One who is Truth.

Prayer: My Father, I thank you because you keep my heart anchored in you. You guard me from ideas that sound right but lead away from your truth. I am one whose discernment is sharpened, and whose life is centered on Christ. Let it be said of me that I am found grounded in truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
