OF SELF CONTROL (II)
“A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.” Proverbs 25:28 NLT
Self-control is a virtue of immense importance, and its value cannot be overstated.
It is no surprise that achieving true self-control requires the help of the Holy Spirit. In our scripture today, a lack of self-control is compared to a city without walls. In ancient times, a city without walls was defenseless and vulnerable to attacks from enemies. Similarly, a person without self-discipline is exposed to harm, leaving themselves open to the enemy’s attacks.
When we fail to exercise self-control, we give the enemy what Paul refers to as a “foothold.” For instance, someone who cannot control their temper gives the enemy access to provoke them into anger repeatedly. In doing so, they may block any opportunities for promotion at work, harm relationships with friends and family, and—most importantly—damage their witness as a believer. This constant failure to control their emotions grieves the Holy Spirit and hinders their ability to be a light to those around them.
This is why it is crucial to put on the full armor of God, so that we can stand firm against the schemes of the enemy. We must not allow our weaknesses or personality traits to be used as an excuse for sinful behavior, especially when they defile the nature that Christ has graciously imparted to us. Remember, His sacrifice has made us new creations. Praise the Lord!
Prayer: Father, thank You for the wisdom You have given me. By Your grace, my spirit is ruled by Your Holy Spirit. I choose to respond with gentleness and patience, and I strive for temperance in all my dealings. Help me avoid bringing reproach to the Gospel of peace and to live in a way that honors You. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
