SEEKING LOVE (I)
“He who covers a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates friends.” Proverbs 17:9 NKJV
It has been said times without number that the Kingdom of God is backwards. What men see as treasures, He sees as curses. What we think of as good may be filthy before His eyes.
Our theme scripture opens us to a truth similar to this. It almost goes against the grain not to be tempted to expose the errors of others especially when we know them to be true. But the Bible calls us to a higher way: covering a transgression. This is not a call to lie or ignore sin, but rather to refrain from broadcasting what can be handled with grace. It is a call to protect rather than to shame, to restore rather than to ruin.
Love does not delight in exposing weakness for the sake of it; love seeks peace, reconciliation, and healing. To cover is not to excuse, it is to preserve the relationship and leave room for God to do His work in the heart of the offender. When we choose to “repeat a matter,” we stir division. When we choose to cover, we seek love and walk in the very character of Christ, who has covered our own sins with His blood.
Prayer: My Father, I thank you for this truth. Help me to resist the temptation to uncover what love can cover. Give me wisdom to discern when to speak truth and when to remain silent, and a heart that always seeks reconciliation over destruction. May my words and actions reflect the covering love of Christ, who bore my shame and granted me peace. Amen.
