TAMING PRIDE THAT MAY RISE FROM DEVOTION
“Lord, my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, Nor with things too profound for me.” Psalms 131:1 NKJV
Revelation, when centered on what we know instead of Who we know, can easily lead to deception. Lucifer is a perfect example, he who once was the most exalted archangel and nearest to the throne, allowed revelation and privilege to exalt his heart, and he lost it all.
Pride carries deception within it, and that deception gives birth to error. In our theme scripture, David reveals a vital safeguard against such pride: he chooses not to concern himself with great matters. You may wonder what these “great matters” are. The literal translation refers to realms of divine wisdom, providence, and mystery matters that transcend human comprehension.
God exalts the humble, and the higher He lifts us in revelation, the deeper we must root ourselves in humility. If ever we allow what we know or experience of God to elevate us rather than Him, we mirror the same folly of those who partook of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Child of God, there is a delicate tension in being knowledgeable in divine things while maintaining the simplicity of a weaned child and that is a heart that knows there is no competition between Creator and creation. Humility is the faithful companion of revelation. It does not mean seeing ourselves as low, but esteeming Him so high that all comparison fades away. Selah.
Prayer: My Father, thank You for the light of revelation and the grace to know You more deeply. I thank you for keeping my heart humble as You lift me, and teaching me to rest in what You reveal without pride or presumption. I thank you for delivering me from the temptation to make knowledge my confidence instead of Your presence. I thank You for the privilege of knowing You, and I yield my understanding to Your infinite wisdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
