THE LIMITS OF HUMAN WISDOM
“And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh.”
Ecclesiastes 12:12 NKJV
In a world overflowing with knowledge, information is always within reach. New books are written daily, podcasts and articles flood our screens, and endless voices compete for our attention. Yet the wisest man of the Old Testament, reminds us that there is no end to human striving for understanding, and the pursuit of knowledge, apart from God, eventually wearies the soul.
While is not a call to despise learning, scripture itself commands us to seek wisdom, for the fear of the Lord is its beginning (Proverbs 9:10). But when study becomes disconnected from reverence, when knowledge becomes pursued as an end in itself, the flesh grows tired and the spirit is left unsatisfied. Only truth rooted in God brings rest.
Child of God, Jesus offers us more than endless information—He offers revelation. He invites us to come to Him, weary and burdened, and promises rest for our souls (Matthew 11:28–29). Unlike the unending production of human words, the Word made flesh speaks life that endures forever. His wisdom does not weary; it refreshes.
Therefore, learn to discern. Books can sharpen us, study can shape us, but only Christ sustains us. Let our greatest pursuit not be to master knowledge, but to be mastered by the Lord who is wisdom itself.
Prayer: My Father, I thank you for this truth. In a world full of voices, I train my ears to hear Yours most clearly. You guard me from chasing knowledge for its own sake, and anchor my heart in the wisdom that comes from You. May my study never weary my soul but instead lead me closer to Christ, the Word of life, to the glory of your kingdom. Amen.
