THE LORD’S PURPOSES

“And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ”Luke 19:31 NKJV

Purpose is defined in many ways by the world, but in truth, it is best understood as a divine reason for existence—one that brings glory to God and plays a part in His redemptive work.

In this single verse, Jesus reveals three profound lessons about divine purpose: First, when purpose is ordained by God, He inclines the hearts of others through divine influence. He does not tamper with their will but opens multiple doors for them to respond. This is evident in the effortless release of the colt—no resistance, no questioning—only readiness.

When the Lord speaks, even the hearts of strangers make room. Second, the One who needs nothing chooses to say He does. What humility, that Christ would express need—not out of lack, but as an invitation for His creation to co-labor with Him in fulfilling divine plans. Though He owned nothing while walking the earth, the natural order responded to Him. Creation groans not only for the sons of God to be manifested, because it first responded to the Son of God Himself. And third, child of God, let this truth be a healing balm to your heart: when you hear, obey.

Your obedience is proof that you hear Him. And those who hear Him are truly His. Don’t second-guess the still voice or the gentle prompt; the fruit of obedience is evidence enough that you belong to the Shepherd.

Prayer: My Father, I thank You that Your purposes are always good and full of wisdom. I live in perpetual surrender for when You have need of anything in my hands. Soften my heart to recognize Your voice and trust Your leading. May my obedience be a living testimony that I am Yours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
