THE WISDOM TO GUARD YOUR HEART
“Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:23 AMPC
The heart of a man is described as a spring of life.
By definition, springs are natural sources of water that flow from the ground. They come from underground reservoirs where water collects, and under pressure or gravity, rises to the surface. Springs are hidden yet powerful—only their Creator knows their true origin. In the same way, the heart is called a spring because it is deeply known first and foremost by God, even more than we think we know our own hearts. Jeremiah 17:9 reveals that the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked—who can truly understand it? Thankfully, our Lord searches and knows every heart (Romans 8:27), and graciously saves us—even from ourselves.
That’s why it is vital to yield our hearts to Him. If there is any hidden wickedness, wrong motives, unhealthy emotions, or disordered desires, He alone is able to keep us from stumbling—especially when our intention was not to do evil. Child of God, your heart is the determining factor in all that God can and will do in your life. It shapes the quality of your outer life (Matthew 15:11), and your decisions—whether moral or behavioral—are directly influenced by the condition of your inner life.
So I echo the words of the Lord: “My son, give me your heart and observe my ways.” Only God can keep our hearts from becoming defiled, and only those with pure hearts and clean hands will see the Kingdom of heaven. Selah.
Prayer: Father, I thank You for this wisdom. I entrust my heart to You—search me, correct me, teach me, instruct me, and lead me in the way everlasting. You alone know what dwells in our hearts, and You alone are worthy to purify my affections and desires. Let Your perfect work be made complete in me as I yield to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
