THE WISE THING TO DO

“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” James 4:17 NIV

At times, understanding God’s will can feel overwhelming, with some people unsure of what to do, while others are constantly learning yet never fully grasping the truth.

In our key scripture, James offers a simple way to evaluate what is truly from God: if you know something is good and you choose not to do it, it becomes sin to you. The good news is that human standards of goodness will always fall short. For example, if you believe it’s good to indulge in every craving, you’re lacking wisdom, because gluttony is also a spiritual issue.

However, if you have resources or tools that someone else around you needs, and you don’t use them, it becomes sin if you withhold your help. Beloved, while some principles build upon others, wisdom is about acting on what you already know.

As you honor the knowledge you have, the rest will become clear. Praise the Lord!

Prayer: Father, I thank you for this truth. Make me sensitive and malleable to what you have already made known to me. As I exercise my spirit to feel after yours, you are at liberty to move in and through me to display your glory to those who may not know you. But also, to emphasize your faithfulness to those who do, in Jesus name. Amen!
