UNDERSTANDING THE SPIRITUAL CHAIN OF COMMAND

“I planted the church, and Apollos came and cared for it, but it was God who caused it to grow.” 1 Corinthians 3:6 TPT

Paul’s first letter to the church in Corinth addressed a series of misconceptions and conflicts that had led to quarrels over spiritual allegiances. As human beings, we often find security and belonging in our families, our associations, our status in society, and the circles we move in.

In the same way, the newly formed church in Corinth began to see Paul and Apollos, who had faithfully preached the good news, as superior figures, taking pride in boasting about who had led them to Christ. Upon hearing this, Paul set the record straight: men follow Christ, not other men.

The Lord, in His sovereignty, may use others as vessels for the work of ministry and for His glory. But make no mistake, Christ alone is the way, the truth, and the life. Child of God, it is commendable to show honor to those who have labored for the Gospel among you. Yet always remember, it is Christ who died for you.

It is He who draws men to Himself when the word is rightly divided. So while you honor your shepherds, keep your allegiance and your gaze fixed on Jesus, for He alone saves and keeps.

Prayer: My Father, we thank You for those You have placed in our lives to guide us in the truth of Your Word. We are grateful for every vessel You have used to point us to Christ. Yet above all, we lift our eyes to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Keep our hearts from pride, and help us to honor leaders without losing sight of You. Thank You, Lord, for Your saving grace and the growth You bring into our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
