VOICE OF GOD (II)
“The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” 1 Kings 19:11-12 NIV
Stillness in biblical original text means to quieting the mind and being at peace. Notice that there is an active participation of an individual in choosing to regard what instills peace.
In our theme scripture, the prophet Elijah was in distress and couldn’t seem to hear God because the noise of fear and Jezebel’s threats was clouding the evident presence of God on his life. This is something we experience as well today, for the Bible doesn’t promise a life free from trials that try to steal our peace and joy (John 16:33). However, there is a greater promise found in Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You.”
Child of God, the privilege of having God’s very presence indwelling in you permits Him to speak in a still small voice. Your part is to quiet your mind and hear your Father. Praise the Lord!
Prayer: Father, I thank you for this wisdom. I train my spirit daily to think on things noble, true, praiseworthy, just, lovely, good and pure. I am able to hear you because you are the center of my affection even when trials and worries press in from all sides. May your word ever dwell so richly and close to heart all the days of my life, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
