BALANCED USE OF LIBERTIES
“To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law.” 1 Corinthians 9:20 NIV
The Scripture we’re reflecting on today can be easily misunderstood if not viewed through the lens of spiritual maturity.
Paul is not suggesting that he compromised or violated God’s commands. Rather, he demonstrates a spirit-led wisdom—knowing when to tread gently and relate to others in order to lead them toward the truth of the Gospel. Unfortunately, some today misinterpret this passage as permission to indulge in the desires of the flesh, leading others into confusion and even bringing reproach to the Gospel message.
As a result, even those with the authority and platform to correct wrongdoing may grow hesitant—offering comfort where bold correction is needed. Child of God, when you find yourself unsure of what falls in the “gray area,” hold fast to what aligns with the unchanging character and nature of God.
It is better to humbly seek wisdom than to lead others astray (Luke 17:2).
Prayer: Father, I thank You for this wisdom. Teach me to discern the times so that my actions reflect Your heart in all things. May my life stir up a hunger and thirst for You in those who know me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
