LIVING EACH DAY UNTO THE LORD

“Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.” 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2 NIV

A story is told of John Harper, a man aboard the Titanic the night it sank.

After ensuring his daughter and niece were safely placed on a lifeboat, Harper dove into the icy waters—not to save himself, but to ask others a single, urgent question: “Are you saved?” When he encountered a man who wasn’t, Harper removed his own life jacket and gave it to him, declaring that the man needed it more. What kind of faith stirs a man to give up his own chance at survival for the sake of another’s eternal soul? Only a life fully persuaded of the hope it clings to—only a man who has already died to himself and lives unto Christ.

In 1 Thessalonians 5, Paul reminds believers not to obsess over dates or signs concerning Christ’s return. Why? Because the heart that is fixed on Christ lives as if He could return at any moment. Paul’s exhortation in the previous chapter was clear: God has not called us to impurity, but to holiness. To reject this is not just to reject instruction—it is to reject God Himself. Beloved, don’t let fruitless speculations or anxious debates distract you from the only moment you’ve truly been given: today. Live today as an offering. Speak words that honor. Work with your hands in humility. And most importantly—love, as He has loved you.

The day of the Lord may come suddenly, but the life that is wholly surrendered is always ready.

Praise be to God.

Prayer: Lord Jesus thank you for this wisdom. Teach me to number my days that I may gain a heart of wisdom. Let me live not in fear of Your return, but in readiness and joy. Help me walk in holiness, speak with grace, and love without condition. May my every moment be lived unto You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
