THE BLESSED FEAR OF GOD

“But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves.” Malachi 4:2 NIV

The verse we reflect on today is a prophetic promise, pointing to Christ, who had yet to come at the time Malachi delivered this message.

In the verses preceding, Malachi speaks of a coming judgment for the disobedient and the arrogant. He describes a furnace of destruction where the rebellious will be cast as a consequence of their defiance against God. However, in a striking contrast, the “sun of righteousness” will rise for those who fear God. This sun, brighter and hotter than any furnace, will bring healing and restoration, not destruction. This passage reveals a profound truth: for those who revere God, the way is always bright, no matter the circumstances around them. King Solomon wisely said, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

When we fear God, we align ourselves with His wisdom and sovereignty, trusting that even the things that seem designed to overwhelm us will ultimately work for our good. This is because our Father reigns over both the times and the seasons, the valleys and the mountains. So, fear not, for the same furnace that will consume the evildoer is the sun that will heal your wounds and turn your trials into triumphs.

As Charles Spurgeon once said, “Patience, then, believer; eternity will right the wrongs of time.” Our hope is sure, and it will not fail us. Trust in it. The sun of righteousness is rising, and it brings healing and joy to all who honor His name.

Prayer: Father, I thank you for this wisdom. I am patient and endurant through trial for I know that my character is forged best through such experiences. I fix my eyes on you for I know my help to will and do good comes from above. Strengthen me and encourage me through your spirit to stay the course to the glory of your name, Amen!
