THE MANNER OF THE SPIRIT

”But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.“
Luke 9:55 NKJV

I speak a lot on the ways of the spirit and sometimes that concept can sound vague or ambiguous to the passive mind.

Allow me to engage your mind and dismantle one of the many misconstrued notions that stumble many believers. A story is given in our theme scripture, of the disciples of Jesus Christ asking him if they should call down fire to retaliate against the samaritan village that had rejected their master.

Jesus’ response is an unexpected rebuke telling them they did not know ‘the manner of the spirit that begets them’.  For many of us if someone wants to fight for a right that seems to have been denied us we cheer them on instead of rebuking them, why?

Because the love of God has not been perfected in us to the degree that we innately remember how God loves both of us and desires that we may all come to the saving knowledge of truth just the same (1 Timothy 2:4).

That is why Paul calls us higher, waking us to the consciousness that if we will judge angels who dwell in the heavens (1 Corinthians 6:3), how much more the smaller things of this life that won’t even matter 10-15 years from today?

Any man who judges anything, no matter how small or big, will prove their ignorance or understanding of the spirit they are of. Let it not be said of you that you called down fire upon that which you would have preached truth to (Mark 16:15). Hallelujah!

Prayer: Father I thank you for this truth. As the psalmist says, my heart is not haughty neither are my eyes lofty. I do not concern my self with things too great for me, instead I seek your wisdom in all things, even in what seems obvious to the eye, I know not to despise it for your ways and thoughts are always higher. May your spirit in me always convict me in error that I may repent and cleave to life, in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen!
