THE SNARE OF COMPARISON

“For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.” II Corinthians 10:12 NKJV

In our theme scripture, Paul uses the Greek word sygkrinō—translated here as compare—but its meaning carries a deeper weight in its original form, helping to drive the point home.

Sygkrinō is used in Scripture to describe how spiritual truths are interpreted and conveyed to those who are spiritual. It speaks of discerning spiritual realities through Spirit-taught words.
In other words, comparison is meant to lead us into clarity and discernment—anchored in truth and aligned with the Spirit of God in us—so that we can rightly communicate what He reveals.

But when we fall into the trap of comparing ourselves with others, we stray. We err because God’s original intent was for each of us to express the uniqueness He placed within us.
It may sound cliché, but even if you mimic someone else so closely that you begin to mirror their ways, there will still only ever be one original. Everything else will just be a copy.

Only you can truly excel at being you. Praise the Lord!

Prayer: Father, I thank You for this truth. I thank You that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I thank You for the skills, the knowledge, the wisdom, and the understanding You have endowed me with. I thank You for the great exploits You’ve prepared for me to accomplish. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
