FREEDOM FROM THE POWER OF SIN

“For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.” Romans 6:6-7 NIV

The word “nature” refers to the inherent qualities or characteristics of something. When we say that humanity has a sinful nature, we mean that, since Adam’s fall, every person is born with a nature that is inclined toward sin.

But being born again—being born of the Spirit—means that when we confess Christ, repent, and are baptized, we are symbolically putting to death that sinful inheritance and receiving a new nature. This new nature is foreign to sin. In our passage, the Apostle Paul emphasizes this transformation, reminding us that the power sin once held over us is broken when that old nature is crucified. As a result, sin no longer has dominion over us.

As a child of God, you have the power to resist sin’s pull. James 4:7 reinforces this: Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Though we may still feel the pull of temptation, through the Holy Spirit within us, we are equipped to choose the godly way. Sin no longer rules us—our new nature in Christ gives us the freedom to resist and walk in victory. Sin’s power has been broken, and we now have the freedom to choose the way of righteousness, not because of our strength, but because of the power of the Holy Spirit within us.

Prayer: Father, I thank you for giving me a victor’s mindset. I have the mind of Christ through the holy spirit and rejoice in obeying your word and shunning evil. I am empowered to live as my Lord set precedent, that I may glorify you with my life, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
