OF YIELDING
“What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you?” James 4:1 NLT
In Philippians 2:3, Paul offers a countercultural teaching that may seem absurd to the unregenerate mind: “Count others more significant than yourself.”
Some commands in Scripture are straightforward, but this one is particularly challenging. Our natural tendency is to prioritize our own needs and desires. We often justify this by thinking, “No one else will look out for me if I don’t.” Yet, the truth is that the way of the flesh is always at odds with the way of the Spirit. But the Lord promises that if we remain still, He will fight our battles (Exodus 14:14). In our theme scripture, James points out that conflicts arise because each of us wants our own way.
This is why Paul’s advice to put others first is so vital—it leads to peace. This doesn’t mean condoning disrespect or harmful behavior, but rather approaching situations with humility. The way of the Spirit may not always be accepted by the world, but yielding can diffuse offense. Trust that if God chooses to vindicate you, He will bring honor in a way no one else can.
So, conduct yourself in a way that pleases Him, and you will carry no shame, but rather the blessings of His abundant favor. Praise God!
Prayer: Father, I thank you for this counsel. Through your holy spirit, I am able to submit to your guidance and put to death the desires of my flesh that lead to strife and divisions. I steward every relationship with the conscience that I represent your kingdom in all my dealings. May the meditations of my heart and the thoughts of my mind be pleasant to you, in Jesus name. Amen! CI.
