THE BAIT OF SIN

“An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him.” Proverbs 5:22 NLT

In fishing, the fisherman uses a cord that has a worm or small insect in order to attract the fish to its own death using something enticing. That is called a bait.

The proverbs’ writer likens the enticement of sin to this same bait that first draws you in by its glittering features and promises, then detains you as it reveals how much of a deception it originally was. For example, you bribe your way through starting a business and swear to yourself that you will make that right by not bribing again but at least get the business started. The problem with this kind of decision is that the law of first fruit doesn’t cease to exist, the foundation on which you build your business will sooner or later be revealed in its fruit.

It is not long before you realize that somewhere along the lines other people may also be corrupt and because they were told of your beginnings, they know you are that kind of person. This is what makes the soul accustomed to evil, habits are formed and even if man wanted to make it up for his mistake, he is soon held captive like the fish on the fisherman’s hook.

Child of God this makes the scripture ever true “resist the devil and he shall flee from you”. Refuse to defile your hands by starting with a shameful testimony. The blessings of the God whom you have believed add neither shame nor sorrow! Hallelujah.

Prayer: Father I thank you for this wisdom. Thank you for your spirit that tames me when I am yielded. Give me the strength of might to choose and delight in what pleases you, in Jesus mighty name. Amen!

CI.
