THE PRIZE IN GODLINESS

“Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:7-8 NIV

Throughout history, cultures have passed down myths and traditions—stories that, though captivating, often lack a foundation in truth.

Take, for instance, the Greek myth of Pandora’s box. Even today, the phrase is used to describe the release of unexpected trouble sparked by curiosity. Yet originally, it was a myth intended to explain the origins of evil in the world. These kinds of tales were woven into the fabric of society and handed down, even to children, despite offering no true wisdom or light.
Timothy, born to a Greek Father but raised after the commands of the God of Israel by his Jewish mother, would have been familiar with such myths.

Paul, recognizing this, points him—and us—not to discard imagination or heritage, but to pursue a greater training: the pursuit of godliness. In the same way, we’re called to examine the ideas and beliefs we’ve inherited. What were we taught to believe without question? And do those beliefs stand up when held to the light of Scripture? True spiritual maturity requires that kind of honest, Spirit-led evaluation. Godliness is not simply moral behavior shaped by cultural norms—it is a life patterned after Christ, bearing fruit that matters now and forever.

Unlike physical training, which benefits the body temporarily, godliness enriches every part of life—both here and in eternity.

Prayer: Father, thank You for calling me to a higher training. Help me to examine what I believe through the lens of Your Word. Teach me to value truth over tradition, and to grow in godliness that bears fruit both now and in eternity. Strengthen me to walk in Your ways and hold fast to what is lasting. In Jesus’ name, amen.
