TO PARENTS (II)
“Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they won’t become discouraged.” Colossians 3:21 CSB
In this passage, Paul uses the word “exasperate,” which goes beyond simply being annoying or frustrating.
The original Greek context suggests it means to “provoke” in a way that breaks or discourages one’s spirit. This can happen when unrealistic expectations are placed on children, leaving them discouraged when they fail to meet those standards. Over time, this can cause them to become sullen, ill-tempered, or even resentful. Raising children without a clear pattern or direction often leads to unnecessary friction. While God’s mercy can redeem even difficult situations, His order for parenting is clear: “Train up a child in the way they should go” (Proverbs 22:6).
As a parent, it is your responsibility to seek the Lord’s guidance in this process.
You are not just a caregiver, but a steward of your child’s life. It is through seeking the Lord’s direction that you can guide them in the way they should go. And remember, if you became a parent before knowing Christ, there is always hope. God does not hold you accountable for what you did not know.
Praise the Lord for His grace and mercy!
Prayer: Father, I thank you for this wisdom. My children are for signs and for wonders. Your wisdom is the stability of their time and their steps shine brighter and brighter into a marvelous day. You order their steps and I raise each according to the pattern you have showed me that they may do the works of the Lord, in Jesus name. Amen!
